What this group is about

The Housing Project Committee focuses on addressing/preventing gentrification in low-income communities of color, addressing lack of housing accessibility for the elderly, homeless, and other marginalized groups.

Goals

  • We want to build better community relationships and empower those who are most impacted by homelessness and housing accessibility

  • We want to advocate for better and safer shelters for the Chinatown, Bronzeville, and Pilsen communities

  • To slow down or stop gentrification in low-income communities of color

Achievements

  • Donated 60 travel kits to the homeless that contained soap, deodorant, etc. In addition to, 60 resources documents 

  • Gathered data from 20 local homeless individuals about what they want to see in their community as well as gather information from 144 surveys

    Community engagement around The 78

  • Educated and gathered community input around impacts of the 78 development in Chicago, including potential displacement.

    • Helped organize against 2022 proposal for Rivers 78 casino due to gambling’s historical association with predatory practices targeting communities of color

    • Help gather survey of over 200 Chinatown residents about how much they know about the 78

    • Supporting community demands for meaningful community engagement, public housing, and safe streets & transportation
