What this group is about
The Housing Project Committee focuses on addressing/preventing gentrification in low-income communities of color, addressing lack of housing accessibility for the elderly, homeless, and other marginalized groups.
Goals
We want to build better community relationships and empower those who are most impacted by homelessness and housing accessibility
We want to advocate for better and safer shelters for the Chinatown, Bronzeville, and Pilsen communities
To slow down or stop gentrification in low-income communities of color
Achievements
Donated 60 travel kits to the homeless that contained soap, deodorant, etc. In addition to, 60 resources documents
Gathered data from 20 local homeless individuals about what they want to see in their community as well as gather information from 144 surveys
Community engagement around The 78
Educated and gathered community input around impacts of the 78 development in Chicago, including potential displacement.
Helped organize against 2022 proposal for Rivers 78 casino due to gambling’s historical association with predatory practices targeting communities of color
Help gather survey of over 200 Chinatown residents about how much they know about the 78
Supporting community demands for meaningful community engagement, public housing, and safe streets & transportation
